What is Dementia Choices?

Dementia Choices is an innovative product review and endorsement programme, led by a team of internationally recognised dementia design experts. The aim of the programme is to accredit well-designed products with a Dementia Choices logo. Products that feature this logo are a clear indicator of the manufacturer’s commitment to improving quality of life for people living with dementia. Products are reviewed and accredited based on key dementia design principles, which includes the impact the product has on air quality and the acoustic environment.

What does it involve?

A Dementia Choices review requires 4 simple steps:

1. Provide general information about your product/s.

2. Your product will then be reviewed by an expert Dementia Centre consultant using the Dementia Choices rating tool. This can be completed onsite or remotely, depending on the nature of the product.

3. A peer reviewed report will then be issued, outlining the review findings and may highlight areas that need improvement.

4. A receipt of the Dementia Choices endorsement will be provided for products that meet the standard. This receipt is valid for 3 years.

What products can be audited?

Dementia Choices can be applied to a wide range of building products, components and furnishings commonly used in environments where people with dementia live and spend their time. Examples include door sets and hardware, flooring and carpets, bathroom fittings, seating, soft furnishings, light fittings and more. Reviews can be undertaken based on:

1. Product design ‘blueprints’ or schematics prior to manufacture

2. Prototypes or pre-production samples

3. Existing products or product ranges

4. Products in actual building setting.
