HammondCare to evaluate Dementia Friendly Communities in Scotland

HammondCare’s Dementia Centre has been awarded a tender to act as evaluators for the Dementia Friendly Communities programme in Scotland, which is funded by the Life Changes Trust.

Associate Professor Colm Cunningham, Director of The Dementia Centre, HammondCare, welcomes the opportunity to use The Dementia Centre’s knowledge and expertise to support this initiative.

“We are delighted to be evaluating the impact of Dementia Friendly Communities funded through the Life Changes Trust in Scotland.” A/Prof Cunningham said.

“As an organisation which works closely with people who are living with dementia and carers, in practice and research, we look forward to discovering the impact of these communities and revealing the contributions that people with dementia, carers and local communities make to them.”

Dementia Friendly Communities has been a core element of the Life Changes Trust’s dementia strategy since 2015. The programme exists to improve the lives of people with dementia and their unpaid carers. The communities are all very different, with some based around a geographical location and others centred on shared interests such as the arts or sport and leisure activities.

As evaluators, The Dementia Centre will explore a number of factors, including success factors, opportunities and obstacles. The Dementia Centre will also consider nine key emerging principles which the Life Changes Trust have identified as contributing to successful dementia friendly communities. The evaluation will take place over two years from June 2019 to June 2021 when a report of the findings will be produced.

The Life Changes Trust was established by The National Lottery Community Fund in April 2013 with an endowment of £50 million to support transformational improvement in the quality of life, well-being, empowerment and inclusion of two key groups in Scotland: people affected by dementia and care experienced young people.
