The foundation of quality care is practical experience and specialist knowledge. Our dementia expertise, grounded in evidence, has developed across nearly 30 years of clinical practice.

Our certified dementia consultants provide expert advice on enabling dementia-inclusive environments through education, design, service improvements and support on the ground.

We’ll work with you to develop bespoke training programs to meet the needs of your care staff and help them provide dementia-inclusive service.

In our workshops, participants examine real-life case studies and access resources informed by best practices. By learning from the experts in complex dementia care, your teams will gain the skills and knowledge they need to support people living with dementia and their carers.

All our workshops can be delivered online or face-to-face with one of our expert practitioner consultants.

Understanding dementia

In this workshop, your teams will gain a foundational understanding of dementia.

Topics include:

  • identifying types of dementia and the symptoms
  • understanding the experience of living with dementia
  • exploring how to support a person living with dementia.

Understanding changed behaviours in dementia

This workshop explores changes in behaviour in people living with dementia and how behaviour is a form of communication.

Topics include:

  • explaining changes in behaviour
  • identifying biological factors that can contribute to changes in behaviour
  • distinguishing the role of social and physical factors in behaviour
  • describing the influence of environmental factors on behaviour.

Meaningful activity and life engagement for people living with dementia

This workshop explores the value of purposeful activity and life engagement to support people living with dementia in residential care.

Topics include:

  • recognising the importance of meaningful engagement
  • using a personal history for connection
  • incorporating a regular review of environmental influences
  • developing a practical approach to individualising interventions.

Communication skills and approach to support people living with dementia

In this workshop, your teams will learn how to tailor communication strategies for people living with dementia, whose ability to communicate may be impacted.

Topics include:

  • identifying barriers to communication
  • exploring different communication styles
  • developing strategies to support effective communication.

Music speaks

In this workshop, our practitioner consultant explores how music engagement can be effectively applied in a dementia care setting. Your teams will understand how music can enable genuine connections, provide comfort and promote a calming atmosphere.

Topics include:

  • recognising music engagement as a valuable way to support personhood
  • enabling music engagement via individualised playlists and a mobile device
  • examining practical considerations of using music engagement one-to-one
  • using music to support a person who is experiencing distress.

The dining experience

In this workshop, your teams will learn about improving quality of life through the dining experience, featuring nutrition, environmental factors and how to engage residents in the experience.

Topics include:

  • understanding the effects of nutrition and hydration on older people living with dementia
  • meeting key nutritional requirements and goals for older people
  • recognising the kitchen as a key element in a domestic environment
  • considering environmental factors which support a pleasurable dining experience
  • engaging residents in meal preparation and mealtime while minimising risk.

Night-time care

In this workshop, your teams will learn the skills to develop an individualised approach to night-time care and foster a supportive environment for residents and the care team.

Topics include:

  • identifying differences between day and night-time care
  • describing the experience of staff and residents at night
  • considering the special needs of residents at night
  • identifying environmental considerations of night-time care
  • outlining self-care strategies for staff working at night.

Disability and dementia

This workshop gives your teams the opportunity to better understand the experience of dementia for someone living with an intellectual disability.

Topics include:

  • identifying changes within the brain and discussing the associated experience of dementia for an individual
  • discussing how symptoms of dementia may present and appear for someone who is living with dementia and an intellectual disability
  • recognising barriers to communication experienced when someone is living with both dementia and an intellectual disability and learning strategies for effective communication
  • understanding the causes of changes in behaviour and formulating strategies for supported responses.

Intervene to manage pain

Presented by one of our experienced consultants, this workshop provides an opportunity for participants to explore pain management strategies in aged care.

Topics include:

  • utilising an efficient, proven-in-practice series of five steps to assist staff to reduce and manage the pain of residents/clients
  • how to identify and assess pain for people who can no longer communicate for themselves
  • how to use validated tools to assess pain
  • strategies for lessening the severity of pain, including medication management, re-assessment and monitoring.
