Dementia Choices

More than 50 million people worldwide now live with dementia, so the need to make public and private spaces more dementia friendly is pressing. For people with dementia, the designed environment is vital to quality of life, but dementia-friendly furniture, appliances, fittings and fixtures can be hard to identify.

One of The Dementia Centre’s key aims is supporting people with dementia to live as independently as possible. Dementia Choices endorsement helps care providers easily identify dementia-friendly items, providing practical solutions to complex environmental issues.

Dementia Choices Centre

The Dementia Choices program:
  • Enables people living with dementia to live as independently as possible
  • Motivates suppliers and manufacturers to create specific dementia-friendly products
  • Provides a reliable guide to dementia-friendly products
  • Supports carers by assisting people with dementia to do things for themselves.

In just a few easy steps, your product could be on its way to Dementia Choices endorsement:

  • You provide us with general information about your product/s.
  • One of our expert consultants reviews your product – onsite or remotely – using the Dementia Choices rating tool.
  • We supply you with a peer-reviewed report including potential areas for improvement.
  • You receive Dementia Choices endorsement, valid for three years, for products that meet the standard.
  • Endorsed products will be showcased on The Dementia Centre website, our social media and communications pieces to ensure your product is easily found by those looking for dementia-friendly products.

What products can we audit?

We look for products that contribute to good environments for people with dementia. Our rigorous, systematic product assessment covers all aspects of product design.

Some questions to consider before submitting a product:

  • Are the product features clear to the ageing eye? In the case of a floor finish, for example, does the product make the floor more visible to the ageing eye?
  • Does the product design take the physical impairments of ageing into account?
  • Is the product’s function immediately recognisable?
  • Is the product intuitive to use without instructions or help?
  • Does your literature explain how to specify your product for someone with dementia? For example, how to use your product in different contexts?
  • Are product variants available to give the consumer choice?
  • Have you tested your product with people who have a diagnosis of dementia?

During the scoping process we help you choose products for assessment that are most likely to be endorsed. Each product is assessed against a strict checklist by consultants from The Dementia Centre with expertise in dementia and design. We will send you a report showing all the features that were assessed and to what extent the criteria have been met.
