Previously the Head of Clinical Services at Alzheimer’s Australia SA, he comes to the Dementia Centre at HammondCare with experience in program management, dementia care research and a passion for assistive technology for people living with dementia.

Jon Benham, Region Manager

Jon Benham has over 20 years of mental health nursing experience. He assisted with the development and implementation of the first Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaM) teams in rural and remote NT, Jon’s passion for psycho-social support, mental health and empowerment has lead him to Dementia Support Australia (DSA) for Australian Regional and Remote Community Services (ARRCS) in partnership with Hammond Care.

Helen McCaskie, Consultant Team Leader

With a background in nursing, Helen came to the Dementia Centre in 2014 after completing a Masters in Older Persons Mental health through the NSW Institute of Psychiatry. She has worked in Mental Health and Older Persons Mental Health in both inpatient and community settings and has always had a passion for caring for those with dementia. Helen has worked for both NSW DBMAS and SBRT in consultant and leadership positions and is now a Team Leader for Dementia Support Australia.

Michael Darragh, Consultant Team Leader

Nursing and Gerontology qualifications, and a background of 15 years in nursing leadership with NSW Health as a NUM and ADON managing aged care rehabilitation and specialised dementia care units, led Michael to extended his passion for aged care and leadership into the ‘not for profit’ aged care sector, with subsequent roles of Director of Nursing, Operations Manager, Executive Care Manager, and Executive Regional Manager leading large residential and community aged care programs throughout NSW and the ACT over the past 20 years.

Ian Nethery, Consultant Team Leader

Ian worked as a Registered Nurse, mainly in acute hospitals for 23 years. While he was a nurse in a consultant emergency department he realised how much improvement could be made to the care that was provided to people living with dementia. It was during this time that Ian had his first contact with HammondCare and realised his passion to improve dementia care, this ultimately led to the opening of the first dementia care unit within an emergency department. For the last several years Ian has been working in senior nursing management positions, and more recently as a Team Leader with Dementia Support Australia.

Heather Campbell, Consultant Team Leader

Juliet Kelly, Consultancy Team Leader

For over 20 years, Juliet worked as a nurse in aged care management, research and education. Whilst working on an acute medical ward, she witnessed the impact of health crisis on the life of older people living with dementia. She believes that critical reflection skills are key to every situation and that it is imperative that all health care providers develop better communication strategies to work collaboratively to ensure the highest quality care possible for those with dementia, their family and carers.

Wendy has worked within health for over 20 years and currently as a Consultant within the Dementia Centre. Her role focusses on education and mentoring for health professionals and aged care staff. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing, Diploma of Applied Science (Ambulance Studies) and Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment & Training. Her work within acute care, pre-hospital, community & residential settings brings diversity to the role. Wendy’s interactive approach challenges staff in dementia care to explore the link between current culture and the dementia experience and also inspires change with end of life care.

Dr Bruce Walmsley, Consultant

BCom (Marketing), MClinPsych, PhD (Psychology-Science)

Dr Bruce Walmsley has more than 20 years’ experience in the telecommunications, charity and government mental health sectors. With a background in marketing management, Bruce has more recently gained registration as a clinical psychologist in Australia and the UK. He has worked as a clinician-researcher for the past five years, helping older people and their family members achieve quality of life through psychology services. Bruce is an endorsed supervisor in clinical psychology, has taught at postgraduate level, and he is passionate about better access to psychologists within aged care. His research explores the possibilities of ageing well, living well with dementia, and models of care and engagement to support this.

Joana is an Occupational Therapist who has worked in the field of dementia care for a decade. Prior to her experience in residential aged care in Australia, she worked for the Alzheimer’s Association in Portugal, providing education, training and direct support to people living with dementia and their families. Joana is passionate about sharing knowledge and empowering others to understand dementia and ultimately to help those with dementia maintain their sense of meaning and independence.

Holly Markwell has a long and diverse background in psychology, counselling, and training within both the disability and aged care sectors. As a skilled facilitator of workshops and education sessions for staff in dementia care settings, Holly is a dynamic advocate for respect and dignity for people living with a cognitive disability. At a National level, Holly partners with Dementia Support Australia consultants, building sector capacity to respond and develop understanding of behaviour related to unmet needs. Personable and interactive, Holly aims to develop care staff capacity to see the person’s world from their perspective, avoid the use of stigmatising language and recognise that all persons, inclusive of those with a cognitive disability, are working to make meaning of their world, using their past history and current strengths to do so.

Paul Morris, Consultant

Having worked in the Health and Social Care sector for 20 years, starting out as a care assistant, working his way to management of residential and nursing homes, and more recently setting up and delivering dementia consultancy in the UK, Paul comes to the Dementia Centre with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field of dementia care. From being involved in the commissioning and building of dementia specific homes and assisting in design for dementia care homes, coaching in positive engagement to care home staff, along with training and development of dementia in commercial settings, Paul has played a major part in developing dementia services for care providers in the UK.

Polly is an occupational therapist and dementia consultant, with a specialist interest in younger on-set dementia. She brings extensive training experience to the dementia centre with expertise in the development and delivery of educational packages for health professionals, care workers and family carers. She also has valuable experience of working within post-diagnostic services in which she has provided 1:1 support and group therapy intervention. Polly has committed her career to the field of dementia care with the ambition of educating others and overall aim of instilling hope.

Julia has worked in aged care for over 25 years. As a registered nurse her range of experiences reach from owner/operator of a Domiciliary Home Care Service, working in acute aged care hospital units and managing nursing and care homes both in the UK and Australia.

She is experienced in facilitating workshops and brings a variety of approaches having worked with multiple dementia specific organisations. Julia has a passion to support care workforce to improve their skills and knowledge, whilst being aware of the importance of their own self-care, which in turn will enrich the lives of all people receiving care.
